attributiveattributive (attributiv): term used of adjectives which premodify nouns, i.e. an adjective placed in front of a noun is said to be in attributive position, and to have attributive function. Attributive function implies that the adjective refers to an attribute of the noun referent. E.g. blue eyes, happy couple, impossible situation. In contrast to predicative adjectives, attributive adjectives generally represent properties of the noun referent that are taken for granted, and are not 'up for discussion'. |
