direct object

direct object (direkte objekt): a clause element which comes in addition to the subject and the verb in transitive constructions. In English the direct object usually follows the subject and the verb. It typically refers to somebody or something that is affected or brought about by the action denoted by the verb. The direct object is typically realized by a noun phrase (or a nominal clause). E.g. The dog bit its owner. I received a present. He made a mistake. She thinks grammar is interesting.
