intransitive verb

intransitive verb (intransitivt verb): a verb which does not need a direct object in order to form a grammatical sentence. E.g. She has arrived. They were swimming.   Intransitive verbs may occur with obligatory and optional adverbials . E.g. They went home. They live in Cambridge.
