number (tall): grammatical category referring to the distinction between singular and plural. The category applies to nouns (e.g. bird, birds), pronouns (e.g. me vs. us), and to a certain extent verbs, which have special present tense forms for third person singular subjects (the bird sings   vs. the birds sing).
